Team Bray Racing’s Ben Bray is currently playing a waiting game as Sydney Dragway officials and Jamboree management decide the fate of this weekend’s rain-affected Sydney Jamboree.
With two round wins to his name at the time of the wet weather, the Sidchrome racer – competing in the Pro Compact bracket aboard his Nissan Altima – could be declared the winner depending on how the closure of the event is called.
“It was a pretty up and down weekend for us here at Sydney Dragway,” said Bray.
“After the excitement of running our first ‘six second’ pass at Willowbank Raceway the weekend before, we were rearing to go and thrilled to throw down a 6.949 second pass at 196.27 miles per hour on our way to a first round win.
“The fact the first win of the weekend came after some turbulent times in qualifying which included smoking the tyres on a 0.003 second reaction time in the first outing and a loose fuel line on our second attempt made that result even sweeter.
“We turned the wick up on the turbo for the second round of racing as we went after Michael Baghdadi’s record ET, and while we spun the tyres I was able to pedal it to take the win – making it two wins from two rounds.
“We were in the staging lanes ready for round three when unfortunately the rain started to fall, and it was decided the event could not continue.
“To have been robbed of the chance to go out there and try to make it three wins from three rounds was definitely disappointing, and now I guess all we can do is wait and see how the results of this event will be called.
“All in all, it was as successful a weekend as it could have been for us in the circumstances – to run another six second pass so quickly was definitely a boost for the team and I feel we were really on the money with the set-up today.”
At the time of the rain-out, Bray was one of just two racers who had won two rounds, and therefore were eligible for the third and final round in the Chicago Shoot Out format. If the event is decided by count back, with Bray’s 6.94 the second quickest Elapsed Time of the meeting, it is possible that the 29 year old from Kallangur will be awarded the Pro Compact category win.
A decision from the management groups of Sydney Dragway and The Jamboree (managed by the Sport Compact Group) is expected in the coming days.
