After a dry spell dating back to 2002 at the Queensland facility, Steve Read has walked away with the Winner’s Trophy on Day 1 of the Santo’s Cranes Super 3 Extreme Drag Race at Willowbank Raceway, QLD.
Read ran a consistency tight-rope through Day 1, negotiating the humid conditions with runs of 4.90, 4.95 and 4.80 to take the final round victory over Victoria’s Darren Morgan in the Final.
“Sometimes I think I wrote the book on how to lose to Darren”, Read laughed.
“He’s got a tough hot rod over there, and lately, he seems to have had our measure when it mattered, but it was great to go head to head with him in the final and finally get that monkey off our back,” Read said.
“For myself and the Read Speed team, it was a virtually trouble-free day in the engine department – the car came back clean after each pass, and in this tight format, you can’t afford to have anything major go wrong. We’re ecstatic to finally grab a win here at Willowbank under the RSR banner.” Read said.

After Larry Dixon’s first round mishap, followed by a solid 4.68 solo run late in the program, Read feels confident that some minor adjustments will help the RSR dragster run quicker on Saturday.
“We’re going to need to”, Read said. “Lee Beard has Dixon’s car back where it should be, and we had some things holding us back from running quicker today, but we’ll need to obviously step up on Saturday. We are treating him as just another car to beat.” Read concluded.
After a great Good Friday, Read is hoping for some more of that Friday form to make the weekend a clean sweep on Saturday night.
