The 2017 Queensland Drag Racing Championship at Willowbank Raceway is off and running to booming entries this year.
QDRC Outlaws which is uniquely run by featuring any form of supercharging – including injected nitro now allowed – saw over 20 entries. Going back to an elimination format, Jake Donnelly cut through the field to face Peter Stirling in the final, a cherry picked off the tree for Stirling allowed the Donnelly ’57 Chev funny car to rocket away and claim first blood in the series.
Racing moved back to a three round format for the other sportsman classes. Mark Allan and Rodney McAuley pushed each other to the limits, and a eventual break out to Allan in the Modified final decided this one as Allan tried to make up an uncharacteristic tenth holeshot on the tree.
David Gauldie’s transition into dial your own racing has been seamless, with the former Super Gas gun taking out Super Sedan over Daniel Morris with a 8.069 on a 8.06.
Tammy Golthorpe conquered a huge Modified Bike field to rack up another win when opponent Garry Kittle red lit in the final.
Reigning Super Street Track Champion Lucas Holz had his perfect title defence halted by Terry Evans in the final. The Torana racer was a little too heavy on the right foot, breaking out by 6 thou and handing the win back to Evans.
Finally in Junior Dragster, a red light by Rhys Beauchamp saw this final over at the tree, but winner Jett Willshire showed his worth still with a 8.117 on a 8.11.
Round two of the QDRC is on Mar 18.
