For South Queensland’s dedicated sportsman racers, there has been a couple of quick-fire Queensland Drag Racing Championship rounds in July, as the Willowbank Raceway squeezes in as much racing as possible before the venue shutdown for the track upgrades.

Round 7 of the QDRC was the second hit out in July for racers of the series, and the final before the shut down with the QDRC returning in November for the first of the final two events.

Supercharged Outlaws was scheduled to be on the program but unfortunately a field could not be pulled together, so we go into Top Sportsman first. As results would have it, the form two racers of the championship would rise to the occasion again and meet in the final round. Paul Doeblien’s Falcon Ute did the business at the tree with a .014 reaction and held on to the win and championship lead at the stripe with a 8.513 (8.47) over Daniel Morris’ 7.965 (7.93).

Lucas Holz has reached gun status in Modified with his fourth event win this season in the QDRC. The altered driver dropped a 9.147 (9.14) pass on Abbey McDonald and her FED in the final and will extend his lead in the championship points.

In Super Sedan, Phil Youlten nailed a .010 light on the tree in the final, but the Torana was run down by Adam White’s perfect 9.510 (9.51) at the finish.

Still torturing the field in Modified Bike is Tammy Goldthorpe, the Suzuki rider has eked out a championship lead with another win in the series, her third for the year, outriding Ben Mohr in the final. The Super Street heavy hitters would not feature in the final round at this event, it was left to Craig Layton and Bruce Anderson to duke it out in the final. Anderson saw the holeshot advantage, but at the broke out by a whole lot at the stripe, handing the win to Craig Layton.

A tough 7.957 (7.95) lap with the holeshot saw the win light go to Rustie Willshire over Jesse Lindner in the Junior Dragster final, wasn’t all bad for Lindner though as the points keep her in the championship hunt.

In testing on the day we saw a few new rides, Geoff Redgrave now has the former Gavin Spann Top Fuel Motorcycle.

Next round of the QDRC will be on Nov 11 where racers will be greeted by a revitalised racing surface. Mitch Roseland’s new 2JZ Scion looks primed for Jamboree pumping out a 6.88. Chris Tait’s Nissan got a little hot under the collar.
