Rachelle Splatt has announced her return to Australian Top Fuel Drag Racing at Meguiar’s MotorEx in Melbourne.
After gaining her Top Fuel license in the early 90s, Rachelle went on to a stellar career that included winning the Australian national championship in her debut season. Along the way Rachelle also broke a number of national and international records, including becoming the first female in the world to break the magic 300mph (480km/h) barrier back in 1994. She is also one of only a handful of Australian racers to secure a full time, fully-sponsored drive in a professional NHRA drag racing team.
Since retiring from Top Fuel in 2006, Rachelle has really missed the sport. However it was the launch of her Facebook page that really got her motivated to get back into racing.
“I was going through old photos,” she said. “And all these memories started coming back. I mentioned it to a few people, they were all enthusiastic and here we are.”
Now that Rachelle has announced her return, her team headed by husband Wayne Lusk and father Ian Splatt, are concentrating on securing a major sponsor for the new season that will kick off at the East Coast Nationals at Sydney Dragway in November.
“I want to come back this time and really enjoy everything around the sport,” she said. “Spend a lot more time with the fans and do a lot more off-track stuff.”
