The group that proposed and received a pre-election commitment to build the Colosseum of Drag Racing for Melbourne has vowed to continue their pursuit after the Matthew Guy-led Liberal/Nationals coalition was defeated in the Victorian State Election.
Guy promised to build the facility if his party won, committing $40m to the project – an initial $10m for the site, planning, and design, then $30m for its construction – and announcing the pledge last week (Sunday, 18 November).
However, the coalition was defeated by the standing Labor government, which will now enter a second four-year term.
The venue proponents were long-time drag racing official Lachlan Craven, three-time Pro Bike champion Maurice Allen (pictured above), and respected motorsport industry media representative Gerald McDornan.
“We are naturally disappointed in the election result, but are thankful to Matthew Guy for hearing our proposal and offering his support with a genuine $40m commitment to build the Colosseum of Drag Racing,” Craven said.
“Mr. Guy recognised the considerable economic and social benefits a dedicated, world-class Drag Racing facility would deliver for Melbourne and Victoria.
“Our proposal went further than any other plan in more than a decade has towards returning regular, big-time Drag Racing to Melbourne.
“This process has given us immense hope and an extremely optimistic outlook for the future. Now we call on all Drag Racing fans and racers to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get behind us. This is only the beginning.”
It was recognised by the Australian National Drag Racing Association in 2006 that a dedicated facility was the best solution to returning reliable and sustainable Drag Racing to Melbourne, and for the long-term future of the sport.
