Mildura hometown hero Phil Lamattina conquered all on Sunday night, taking out round two of the Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Champion. The final was a cracker against Wayne Newby, with the Carrot King going to the stripe by the barest of margins, 3.19 to 3.20.
The atmosphere was electric at Mildura’s Sunset Strip, with many of the big crowd experiencing Top Fuel for the first time. Conditions though were challenging for crew chiefs, and there will be some late night head scratching to come up with a tuning combination to battle the unique Mildura track on race day at round two of the Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship.

Mildura’s Sunraysia Drag Racing Club has pulled off the biggest coup in drag racing, securing a round of the Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship for the Sunset Strip facility. The event, which takes place March 12 and 13, is the first Top Fuel championship round to be held in Victoria in a decade and sees all active teams and six Top Fuel cars heading to Mildura to race in their 10,000hp rocket ships.
The first eighth-mile event in the history of Top Fuel Championship racing will take place at Mildura’s Sunset Strip on March 12 and 13, with teams preparing for the unique challenge of the shorter distance.
