A beautiful sunny day greeted racers at Adelaide International Raceway for the Morpowa Super Sunday 1/8th Mile event in February. This was the first of the planned ANDRA sanctioned Street Meets held by Rino D’ Alfonso of Racing Onn Promotions which hopefully will be a regular occurrence.
It was obvious from the line up of racers at the gates an hour before they opened that everyone was keen to get out on the track again after the success of the Centennial meet in November. It was good to see all the old familiar faces as well as a lot of new ones with that look of excitement again knowing that we would now have regular race meetings in Adelaide again.
There was a good mix of tough street cars, competition cars and some bikes to keep the spectators happy, and with no bracket racing there was plenty of runs to be had by racers. There were a bounty of big burnouts from the V8 boys but they were quickly matched by the VL turbo brigade and it looked like Renee Cockerill was playing hide and seek in the smoke with her ‘32 Roadster. Some highlights included Shane Kramer who was there with his Blown 560 Pontiac under the watchful eye of his engine builder Dave Lee from Dave Lee Race Engines. Shaun Kerkman went into the fives with some solid passes in his Pro Fitness Supercharged Outlaws Trans Am but late in the day got a bit crossed up and kissed the wall, it looked like some minor scratches on the car luckily. Greg Coombs was trying out his new water to air intercooler in his Supra and having some good results keeping his inlet temps down as well as his times. Darren Mallison ran best of 6.65 @ 103 mph in his wheel standing Corona keeping the crowd entertained and Mike Vidau unfortunately hurt the engine in his blown Rodeo Ute. It was another well organized event with plenty of good cars and great weather, congratulation must go to Rino and his crew once again.
