It has be 50 years since the New South Wales Hot Rod Association ran their first drag race and milestone will be celebrated at “The Ultimate Bench Race” in March.
March 28, 1965 was the date of the first drag race conducted by the New South Wales Hot Rod Association at the Castlereagh Airstrip. From humble beginnings the sport of drag racing has come a long way from that first race which attracted approximately 100 entries that were mostly street driven hot rods and modified street sedans.
The first bracket winners were all seasoned Victorian racer in John English who took out Top Eliminator driving his Competition 1932 Ford Roadster, Sedan Eliminator was won by the amazing Midvale Volkswagen driven by George Stewart and Hot Rod Eliminator was taken out by Tony Mullens driving his multi-carburettor Y Block Ford powered 1932 Ford Street Roadster
Fast forward to March 28, 2015 and Bench Race Promotions will celebrate the 50 year life of drag racing in New South Wales with a celebration at the Liverpool Catholic Club. March 28th will be 50 Years to the day of the first race conducted by the New South Wales Hot Rod Association at the Castlereagh Airstrip which became known as Sydney International Dragway and later Castlereagh International Dragway. The celebration will be centred around the many racers who made their mark in drag racing at the various New South Wales venues, we will have an overseas racer as our guest of honour on the night.
A poster to commemorate the 50 years of drag racing will be produced to celebrate this milestone in the illustrious life of drag racing and will be on sale on the night.
The celebrations will feature as many racers as is possible on the night to enable the story of 50 years of drag racing to be told. The bulk of the racers are everyday family people working to buy a home and to run a race car as a hobby, these are the people that turn up at every race meeting that they can afford to race at, they were the backbone of the sport. The night will also allow us to recognise some of the many officials that did their best to keep the tracks operational race meetings running smoothly.
