In the world of Australian Pro Stock, the Leake name needs no introduction. Now, second generation racer Thomas Leake has made the step up to Pro Stock from Top Sportsman and he’s no stranger to the high octane lifestyle of the sport. His recent debut in Round 1 of the PDRC/NDRC in November 2024 marked a significant milestone in his career. But the road to Pro Stock wasn’t as straightforward as it might seem.

“I’ve always loved Pro Stock as I have been around it for as long as I can remember,” Thomas shared, reflecting on his early years growing up around the drag strip. “I love the competitiveness, the logistics and setup, and the good times shared with friends and family at the track!”
His journey began in Super Street at just 17, before progressing through the ranks of Super Sedan and Top Sportsman. It was, however, the transition to Pro Stock that caught him and the Pro Stock community by surprise.

“The step up to the GXP came as a shock to be honest. Dad(Bruce), Rus, and Tony sprung it on me three days before a private test day. Two weeks later I was racing my first Pro Stock event,” Thomas revealed.
The rapid shift from Top Sportsman to the 5 speed GXP was a daunting but exhilarating leap into a new realm of championship drag racing. “My debut event was awesome although very different to what I’m used to in Top Sportsman. I’ve been working on dad’s car for years, I know the car inside out, but stepping into the driver’s seat was harder than expected.”

Stepping up into Pro Stock wasn’t just about getting used to the new 5 speed for Thomas. Theuma & Leake Racing are celebrating a half century in Australian Drag Racing, a feat only known for the legends of the sport. And what a way to celebrate it with the second generation stepping up into Pro Stock.
“This season for me will be all about getting comfortable in the car, laying down consistent numbers and shaking things up a bit,” he said, acknowledging the challenges ahead. “We recently celebrated Dad’s 50th anniversary of racing, so I have big boots to fill.”
While many would be overwhelmed by the complexity of Pro Stock, Thomas is approaching the season with a sense of excitement and determination. His focus isn’t just on racing; it’s on mastering every aspect of the sport that has had such an impact on his life.
Thomas Leake’s potential in the sport is clear. His debut is not just about a fresh face behind the wheel; it’s about the continuation of a family legacy, one that is driven by passion, hard work, and the desire to leave his mark on the sport. 2 events in, Thomas has already ran a PB 7.011 second pass and has continually improved behind the wheel.

For Thomas, the journey is just beginning, but with his background and determination, it’s safe to say that the Australian drag racing scene is in for some exciting moments ahead. Keep an eye on the track, as the Leake name continues to race forward in the high-speed world of Pro Stock.
