Paul Carey is set to begin licensing a new Top Alcohol Altered next month at Perth Motorplex.
After a braking area crash in his Toyota quad cam V8-powered Mazda RX7, Carey made a brief move to a Ford Falcon Top Doorslammer to get back into racing but always dreamed of a centre steer chassis.
“This has been a few years in the making really,” he said. “My intention was to move to this type of car, but I just could not feel comfortable in the half a dozen I sat in.
“So I purchased the Ford Falcon Top Doorslammer from Anthony Begley just to get back into racing and managed a 6.45/218mph with a pedal using the two speed Powerglide.
“I sold the Falcon and finally felt happy after sitting in this car – it’s more laid back. We are hoping that running under 2000 pounds may really bring the small cammer into its own.”
At just over four litres in size, the Toyota V8s aren’t big on capacity but they do produce plenty of high revving horsepower and Carey has been one of the pioneers of the motor’s use in Australia.
In anticipation of some five second ETs, Carey has added Lamb carbon brakes, a Trick aluminium bellhousing, a three speed B&J transmission, new front wheels, a Rick Johns altered body, JPP rear struts and aircraft wings built by his own Aero Group engineering company.
“(Chassis builder) Ian Jenkins has been my guide through the build, and invaluable,” Carey said.
Carey will make first runs in the car at the Nitro Night event on February 17, 2018 at Perth Motorplex.
