Valvoline’s range of lubricants have been tested in the harsh conditions of Top Fuel drag racing for decades. Jim Read Racing first partnered with the company 45 years ago, with team patriarch Jim Read carrying the Valvoline name on his championship-winning, nitro-fuelled dragsters.

Over the years, Top Fuel engines have evolved to produce over 10,000 horsepower, capable of accelerating their drivers to 520kmh in just 3.7 seconds. Oil technology has advanced alongside, resulting in engines that are more reliable than those in the past.

Jim Read Racing crew chief Bruce Read said the team’s modern Hydraulink Top Fuel dragster relies on quality lubricants to achieve peak performance.

“Top Fuel dragsters have come a long way, and we don’t see the mechanical carnage in the class that we used to,” he said. “A lot of that improvement is due to the oil, which better holds up to the extreme conditions we put it through. Our motor needs new oil every run, so some people might wonder what the difference is between oils? The truth is that those few seconds are the hardest test an oil can go through. Thanks to Valvoline we have never had to worry from the moment the light turns green to the time the parachutes come out.”

Top Fuel drag racing is heading for a resurgence in 2022, with the new Australian Top Fuel Championship set to take race teams to more tracks, in front of more spectators. Read said Valvoline’s increased support would be a valuable part of Jim Read Racing’s push to win the inaugural championship.

“This is an exciting time for nitro drag racing in Australia, and with Valvoline on board along with our major sponsor Hydraulink and our other fantastic sponsors, we have a great platform to challenge for the title.”

Valvoline’s director of sales and marketing Geoff Newson said Valvoline were thrilled to be expanding their alliance with Jim Read Racing.

“Nitro Top Fuel dragsters are the ultimate proving ground for our oils and we are looking forward to showcasing Valvoline throughout the Australian Top Fuel Championship,” he said.

There are further interesting developments soon to come from Jim Read Racing, with the team champing at the bit to prepare for the season.

“Obviously with the lockdowns in place we are doing a lot of waiting, but behind the scenes we have made some big investments and we are really looking forward to revealing some big news in the coming months. We are hopeful that we will be able to test before the season and be ready to take the fight to PremiAir Racing, Lamattina Top Fuel Racing and Rapisarda Autosport International next year.”

The first event of the Australian Top Fuel Championship is scheduled to take place at Sydney Dragway on January 21-22, 2022.
