At Midnight Mayhem, quick thinking, quick reactions, and all the right safety gear saved the day when the events of a seemingly normal pass quickly went sideways in the braking area for Jamie Borg’s RX3 weapon.
Borg’s street RX3, aptly licensed as ‘WPNRX3’ was punching out big numbers, clocking a 8.19 at 167MPH from the little 13B all on a 225 tyre – the quickest anywhere in the world for that combination.
However at Midnight Mayhem after another mid 8 second pass, Borg experienced most driver’s worst nightmare when the RX3’s engine bay erupted in flames. A silicone hose split, which then slightly dislodged the intake plenum where the injectors are positioned causing the fire. Borg remained calm and quickly unbuckled to grab the easily accessible fire extinguisher to try and douse the flames. Arriving almost immediately, the Sydney Dragway fire crew also showed why they are so highly regarded, taking over to completely extinguish the blaze.
Fortunately damage was minor, in fact Borg made the repairs in the pits and drove the car home later that night.
We are thankful Borg allowed the footage taken by Import Media to be shown publicly, not only on how to react in unexpected situations, but the importance of the correct safety equipment being fitted and easily reached that saves the day.
