Peter Xiberras heads to this weekend’s season-ending Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway (June 6-9) as the back-to-back winner of the last two rounds of the Top Fuel championship.
Queensland’s premier drag racing facility is a happy hunting ground for the two-time champion: the last time he and the PremiAir Nulon Racing team headed to Willowbank Raceway they took the event win, claimed their first Top Fuel title, and also set the quickest pass in Australian drag racing history over the 1000 ft distance – a record that stood until recently.
“We are determined to reclaim that record this weekend,” Xiberras said.
Significant upgrades and improvements have recently been made at Willowbank Raceway. Xiberras inspected the new track surface last week following a test day for his Supercars team at the next-door Queensland Raceway.
“The track is looking great, and I am very eager to get out there and race on it,” Xiberras said.
“It looks very smooth and should be really fast – perfect for new records!” he smiled.
Xiberras is currently fourth in the championship standings, 48 points behind third-placed Phil Lamattina – who unfortunately won’t be on-track this weekend following the loss of a family and team member earlier this week.
“Alongside reclaiming the record, a big focus for us is, of course, to get the event win and bring home another Gold Christmas Tree trophy with us,” he said.
“With two straight wins behind us, we are full of confidence and ready to do battle.
“A third championship may be out of reach for us this season, but we would, of course, still like to end the season on the highest note possible.
“Third place was within reach and a focus for us heading into this event, and with Phil now not attending it looks like we should be in a good spot to claim that by the end of the weekend, but I must say this certainly isn’t how we wanted to do so.
“A sa team we are all sending our deepest condolences to Phil Lamattina, the Lamattina family, and LTFR on the loss of Uncle Tony, and I am sure everyone in Top Fuel will be thinking of them this weekend.”
The Winternationals will be held at Willowbank Raceway across June 6-9, hosting the final championship round for the 2023/2024 NDRC season for Top Fuel. For event information, visit www.ndrc.tv or www.willowbankraceway.com.au
