After suffering a devastating flood earlier this year, the Portland drag racing community are in high spirits after it was announced that major track works are nearing completion and a return to racing will happen in November.

Buoyed by the imminent return of championship drag racing to Melbourne, the Victorian Drag Racers Club (VDRC) has donated a set of vehicle scales to the Australian National Drag Racing Association’s Victorian/Tasmanian division.

More than a hundred Pink Lady silhouettes will create a ‘Mini-Field of Women’ display at Willowbank Raceway this Saturday 12 October 2013 in a meaningful show of support for women and families affected by breast cancer.

Steve Read will come into Fuchs Nitro Thunder presented by Crow Cams on October 19 as the only Top Fuel driver with previous experience on Melbourne’s Calder Park drag strip and the two times ANDRA national champion is confident that will give him the edge he needs over the competition.

ANDRA Top Bike championship leader Chris Porter is heading into next weekend’s Fuchs Nitro Thunder presented by Crow Cams with a near unassailable position in the points but there is still some work to do to ensure his first title is wrapped up.

Current and Five times Australian ANDRA National Champion, John Zappia made excellent progress in his championship bid, with a finals appearance in Adelaide at Round 7 of the Top Doorslammer Championship at the Lady Daly Hotel Springnationals, edging closer to leader Peter Kapiris. The Fuchs Lubricants / Striker Crushing Monaro were favourites to win after top qualifying and re-setting the track record, but unfortunately lost the final to young Benny Bray.

  The challenge to increase crowd numbers and the scarcity of a national sponsor has seen the need for drag racing  to evolve and adapt in order to address these and other issues. The case of dwindling Top Fuel fields recently saw a rule proposal for the 2014 season that would see the integration of Top Fuel and Fuel Funny Car into a homogenous bracket to be known as Nitro Eliminator.

Current and Five time Australian ANDRA National Champion, John Zappia heads to Adelaide for Round 7 of the Top Doorslammer Championship at the Lady Daly Hotel Springnationals to be held over 20th – 21st September, and is quietly confident the Fuchs Lubricants / Striker Crushing Monaro will perform well over the reduced 1,000 foot event.
