When Anthony Begley stood on the throttle pedal inside the Chemical Warfare Nitro Funny Car, he knew something was wrong almost immediately.

The South Coast Wild Bunch Wars event at South Coast Raceway in Portland, Victoria was called off yesterday after a major incident during a burnout.

In one of the most bizarre and expensive Funny Car races in Australian history, two drivers escaped unscathed from terrifying incidents at either end of the Perth Motorplex drag strip. The first heartstopper was when Anthony Begley blew up almost on the step of the throttle in the Chemical Warfare Nitro Funny Car. In an explosion that resembled something out of the pre 90% nitro era in the NHRA, Begley turned the body into confetti. The drama for the race wasn’t over, with opponent Matt Abel then launching the body off Fun-Da-Mental right at the end of his run as the supercharger went pop. Owen Ducker captured this spectacular video from the start line, while Mel’s Motorplex Mania got the opposite side and Bradley Morris caught the action from further down track. Needless to say, the carnage prevented either team from returning for the rest of the Nitro Night event’s match racing.
